Black and White Art

I am an artist painting figurative art; and sharing my work with you on hub pages. I have a variety of styles of which I often chop and change ; such is the nature of a fickle artist!

I take a whole range of influences and mix them up to produce my art ; and I'm continually inspired by others and their work; without the risk of plagiarism; I beg; steal and borrow from everything.

I am unable to paint slow so my work appears full of movement and hopefully doesn't appear as if I've rushed it. The work is me and I am the work... corny; but true.

This is a short selection of my black and white work.

Going shopping

Black and White and sepia tones

As a painter I shall never signify anything of importance. I feel it absolutely. Vincent van Gogh

I love black and white art ; and the impact it has on the viewer. I often use ink on paper for quick results and the outcome is often more pleasing than paintings I have laboured over. Work that I have considered just a sketch have formed the basic of a series of paintings and have even become the main painting to a series.I think that is the beauty of black and white art; I'm always attracted to it; and a black and white photo appeals to me far more than a colour photograph.

The painting above was done for an art group I am a member of; it was done in haste in order to fulfil a deadline ; but I was pleased with results and the outcome.I was depicting a famous superstore in America that is low brow.. to say the least; so I took it and made it glamorous; as shopping for groceries is never glamorous.

    black and white portrait

    Amanda

    Black and White portraits

I've been 40 years discovering that the Queen of all colours is black. Auguste Renoir

Black and white portraits have a double impact ; you leave behind the distraction of colour to look into the person you are painting and reveal their character.

Portraits are not my strong point ; this one was a friend of mine called Amanda ; it is one of the few portraits that actually looked like the person I'm painting ; I have a selection of portraits that look nothing like the person I'm painting.

I cannot say portraits interest me but I will attempt them every now and again; and usually always in black and white ; if I had the complication of colour ; then the person would be lost.

    Dance in black and white

    Dancer

    Black and white with expression

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way--things I had no words for.Georgia O'Keeffe

Why we are drawn to black and white photography more than a colored photo? is it the artistic merits that are revealed in a black and white picture; and the depth of expression that cannot be revealed in a colour photograph; maybe that is what captivates us and draws us in.

This black and white painting of a dancer ;did eventually become a colourful red picture ; I felt only red could express the passion of the dancer and her movement; I liked her in black and white but loved her more in colour; she now resides in California accompanying an artist in her studio; sending out the powerful vibe of passion and joy.

There is an expressive quality to your work, but no one should ever mistake it for appearing rushed. The freedom in your pen and brush strokes are wonderful and add a grace and movement which some artists try all their lives to accomplish.

Thanks for sharing your work and your vision with us.

Thank you viryabo and mike; very nice for you to comment on my work; I have tried over many years to accomplish the 'movement' in my work ; and for someone to recognise it and credit me for it is a good feeling. Thank you.

I just drop by as a new comer. When I read "The freedom in your pen and brush strokes are wonderful and add a grace and movement which ", I was amazed, coz, I have to admit being a Chinese art fan, I rarely rarely talk arts with western friends, and I always had this impression that western painting/drawing only care about visual effect after the work being finished, by contrast, Chinese painting view the movement of brush while the work is being made as a part of the production. I know, I know it must be my ignorance. When I read the sentence in the ".." I feel there must be a world that I never explored before. It's another reason for someone alway try something new and different. thank you. thank HUB

All of your art is beautiful. But I especially loved "Dancer" above. It is full of movement and quite striking.

I am also intrigued by the woman playing pinball in a corset. Amusing and original.

Thank you for sharing your creative talents. I enjoyed this page very much.

A walk in black and white

      woman walking

      Pen and ink on paper

Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.Pablo Picasso

This drawing was originally a fashion illustration ; but the flow of the ink and the lack of detail ; made me abandon the detail and go for the expression. I love ink and mixing it with paint and water gives it a fluid quality that is unique to ink; and makes it a joy to work with.

Black ; white and a touch of colour

      Red wine

Black and white with a touch of colour

Art is long, life is short. A picture can become for us a highway between a particular thing and a universal feeling. Lawren Hart

I love monotone paintings that when looked at it detail actually have many colours within them; this painting called 'red wine' appears monotone but on further inspection actually is full of yellows; greens; browns and reddish browns.

I have a knack for pen/ink works on paper, but mine generally are more of lines and geometrics.

      Your works are beautiful.

Admit again that I rarely view western drawings and paintings, shame.

After browsing your works. I am certain about one thing:

      if meet artists,

I?want to recommend Chinese Shengxuan/Shuxuan Paper to westerners; and recommend canvas to water-ink painters in China.

a fresh impression from your hub, thanks again.

        Ink on paper

        Lazy Day

        Ink on paper

Every good painter paints what he is.Jackson Pollock

There is something of the artist in all the work they produce ; I am often asked if a painting I've done is me ; and although I never paint myself ; there is a piece of me in all the work whether that is a desire ; a feeling or a thought transferred onto paper.

This picture was not intended to be me ; but everyone asks if it is me ; so I have decided it is me; whether I like it or not.

In Sacramento, there's an artist named Dianne Poinski who paints black and white photos. Although it's not figurative art, you might like it. Dig the photos. Later!
